7 Christmas adverts that stand the test of time

There are just over four weeks until Christmas, and the retailers are doing battle once more. Over the last few years, the ante has been well and truly upped in the battle to capture hearts and minds and this year, our heart strings have once again been tugged to see if any loose change falls out. Cynical, moi?

The unveiling of the John Lewis Christmas advert has become something of a media and cultural event in recent years. Following last year’s bear and hare story which made a nation ahhhhh in unison, there’s more of the same this year as a young boy finds a friend for his best friend - a lonely penguin named Monty.

But this year, John Lewis finds its tearjerker crown under threat from Sainsbury’s Christmas ad, which is certainly stealing the headlines. In an emotional tribute marking the centenary of the Great War, the four minute advert takes tells the story of the Christmas truce on the Western Front, as the soldiers down tools, shake hands, share gifts and kick a football around. It’s pretty remarkable stuff for a supermarket ad, but worth a watch. Some may be uncomfortable with the juxtaposition of the bloody war and an attempt for people to buy their spuds in Sainsbury’s, but it’s beautifully and respectfully shot, and the bar appears to have been raised.

So how do these two adverts compare to other classic offerings. Here at World First, we’ve got all nostalgic and had a think about some of our favourites.

1. OXO – My Christmas

ITV have announced that this advert will be shown on Christmas Day as a tribute to Lynda Bellingham, who played the beleaguered but much loved OXO mum.

2. Irn Bru – Snowman

Raymond Briggs’ beloved Snowman is as much a part of Christmas as turkey and The Queen. But here, the Snowman shows a cheeky side, nicking a child’s Irn Bru.

3. John Lewis 2011

Here’s a kid who can’t wait to get to bed on Christmas Eve. Not because he can’t wait to open his presents in the morning, but because he can’t wait to give on to mummy and daddy.

4. Coca Cola – Holidays are coming

For many, when the Coca Cola trucks make their way onto our screens, that’s the start of Christmas.

5. Lurpak – Douglas at Christmas Oh go on then – as it’s Christmas. Douglas the butterman gets to do his bit.

6. Quality Street – Magic Moments

The lollipop lady’s always there. Rain, shine or snow, she’s there to look after us. This boy thought she deserved a little something in return.

7. Yellow Pages – Mistletoe Good old Yellow Pages. The big book helps a little boy get a Christmas kiss!

So what's your favourite? I'm voting for the Snowman who nicks Irn Bru...
